Human skin is made up of three layers which are epidermis, dermis, and subcutis. Hot and long showers affect the epidermis layer which is the outermost layer. This layer is filled with keratin which is responsible for providing defence against outside environment and also help the body skin in retaining moisture. To help keratin retain moisture, a thin oil layer is produced by our body. That’s the biology.

What happens to our skin when we take long showers?

  • The oil layer is washed off when we take showers. Excessive showering completely washes off this oil thus disallowing keratin retain moisture. So, your skin looks dry and signs of aging like wrinkles can be seen.
  • Although tub time might feel very luxurious, spending more time in a bath tub taking showers can harm your skin by completing making it dry and pale. There is no natural bounce in the skin and we tend to develop folded skin.
  • Excessive showering can cause redness in the skin which gradually turns into itching and peeling. Yes, it is something close to a sunburn. This leads to disrupting of skin’s moisture balance leading to itchy skin.
  • The essential fats and proteins present in the oil layer are washed off thus robbing you of your healthy and glowing skin.
  • It leads to dry skin which can cause infection. The infection if not treated immediately might even lead to skin cancer. Yes. That’s how serious it can get!
  • Itchy rashes are also developed which lessens your beauty. Having a pretty face fails to grab attention if you have rashes all over your skin.
  • Cool showers which can be taken twice in a week can help to keep your hair strong and healthy. Also, there is a natural glow in your skin. But, excessive cool showers as well is a NO.

Thus, both hot showers and cool showers when taken excessively can have adverse effects on your skin. So how do you reduce the effects?
